Matrix Audio MS-1 Pre: Music Streamer with DAC and Analog Preamp
The Matrix Audio MS-1 Pre is a music streamer with a dual-mono DAC and integrated analog preamplifier for power amplifiers or active speakers. It combines streaming and your own music archive with existing playback devices, including a turntable via the MM/MC phono input.

Matrix Audio MS-1 Pre Preamp and Volume Control
Unlike the MS-1 with a fixed line level, the Pre version also handles volume control. In the analog preamplifier, a precision resistor network and reed relays perform this task. From there, adjustable XLR and RCA outputs connect to the power amplifier or active speakers.
An additional fixed XLR line output remains available for recording or monitoring devices. It can be used in parallel with the adjustable outputs.
Streaming and Music Archive with the Matrix Audio MS-1 Pre
Music from TIDAL, Qobuz, or Spotify can be started via the respective Connect function. In addition, it supports AirPlay 2, Roon Ready, and DLNA/UPnP. The MA Remote app for iPhone, iPad, and Android smartphones brings local music, internet radio, and device settings together.
Your own archive also has its place: either on a USB drive or on an optional internal M.2 NVMe SSD. Its contents can be managed via network sharing and supplemented with the app's copy function.
The streamer connects to the network via Ethernet or the SFP port with a suitable optional module. On the device itself, the display shows album covers and title information.
Digital and Analog Sources on the Matrix Audio MS-1 Pre
For playback devices outside the network, the MS-1 Pre offers USB Audio, optical and coaxial S/PDIF, as well as IIS-LVDS. Analog devices connect via XLR and RCA. The turntable has its own phono input with a switchable MM/MC preamplifier.
Due to internal digitization, analog input signals are also available at the IIS-LVDS digital output. A compatible external DAC can therefore also be included.
Dual-Mono DAC and Clocking in the Matrix Audio MS-1 Pre
The internal conversion is based on AKM chipsets consisting of AK4191 and AK4499 with separate channel boards. The dual-mono design is complemented by adjustable PCM resampling and DSD conversion.
A DPLL circuit is responsible for clocking. Anyone wishing to incorporate an external clock can use the 10 MHz input.
Construction and Finish of the Matrix Audio MS-1 Pre
In the CNC-machined enclosure, an H-shaped aluminum structure creates separate sections for the electronics. The analog and digital sections each have their own toroidal transformer. Matte surfaces and the circular enclosure pattern define the exterior design.
