McIntosh MT5 – Precision Turntable for Your Record Collection
The McIntosh MT5 combines smooth, consistent record playback with the direct operation of a manual turntable. The pre-mounted Sumiko Amethyst and factory default settings make it easy to set up as an analog source for your hi-fi system.
McIntosh MT5 Features at a Glance
- Playback: The magnetically supported platter and belt drive reduce disruptive vibrations.
- Cartridge: Sumiko Amethyst with a line-contact diamond for precise tracking of demanding record grooves.
- Operation: Separate switches for operating mode and speed, plus a manual tonearm lift.
- Design: Green-illuminated platter, glass cover, and included dust cover.
Connection and Compatible Amplifiers for the McIntosh MT5
The included Amethyst is a moving-magnet cartridge. The RCA outputs connect to a suitable MM phono input. If your system only has high-level inputs, a separate MM phono stage is required; an AUX or line input alone is not sufficient.
The McIntosh CA RCA analog cable, available separately, connects the MT5 to an MM phono input or a separate MM phono stage. Its multiple layers of shielding help keep external electromagnetic interference away from the audio signal.
In a McIntosh system, the lighting can be connected to a compatible preamplifier or control unit via power control. This control connection is an additional option and is not required for music playback.
Smooth Record Playback with the McIntosh MT5
The solid acrylic platter and its magnetically supported ceramic bearing help keep disruptive vibrations away from playback. The regulated belt drive supports smooth operation, even during extended listening sessions.
The multi-layer chassis, with a stainless steel base, aluminum plate, and acrylic top, is additionally damped. This design specifically targets resonances that can impair the music signal.
Sumiko Amethyst and Tonearm of the McIntosh MT5
The Amethyst uses a bare line-contact diamond to track the groove. This stylus design is intended for the precise reproduction of even demanding musical passages.
The damped Dural-aluminum tonearm offers adjustment options for tonearm height, anti-skating, and azimuth. Tracking force, anti-skating, overhang, and arm height are preset from the factory; after assembly, monitoring the settings remains important.
Positioning the McIntosh MT5
Choose a mechanically stable surface with as much distance from the speakers as possible. This reduces the risk of acoustic feedback and needle skipping.
With the adjustable feet and the included spirit level, a small bubble level for precise alignment, the turntable can be positioned horizontally. Direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent discoloration of the surface.
Manual Operation of the McIntosh MT5
Separate rotary switches select the operating mode and record speed.
The tonearm lift supports controlled lowering and raising of the needle. The included record clamp helps keep the placed record flat.
Design and Dust Protection of the McIntosh MT5
The green-illuminated platter, glass cover, and reflective stainless steel chassis continue the characteristic McIntosh accents. The brightness of the platter lighting can be adjusted on the back.
Between listening sessions, the transparent, precision-fit dust cover protects the moving parts from dust.
Suitability and Important Notes for the McIntosh MT5
Who is the McIntosh MT5 suitable for?
- Music lovers who want to listen to their record collection on a high-quality stereo system.
- Listeners who want to operate records and the tonearm by hand.
- McIntosh systems that are to be supplemented with an analog music source.
Important Notes for the McIntosh MT5
- After unpacking, assembly steps and a check of the alignment are required; we, as the dealer, are happy to offer professional setup.
- Do not move the turntable with records mounted, as the platter bearing may be damaged.
Conclusion
The McIntosh MT5 is suitable for stereo systems where the record collection is used regularly. Its adjustable tonearm offers room for proper adjustment, even if a different cartridge is installed later.
