McIntosh MA12000 2-Channel Integrated Amplifier with Hybrid Drive
The McIntosh MA12000 is a 2-channel integrated amplifier for high-quality audio systems. Its Hybrid Drive concept combines a tube preamplifier with four 12AX7A tubes and a solid-state power amplifier with 350 watts per channel. Thus, the MA12000 combines analog preamplifier technology with high output power and modern digital features.
Hybrid Design for Analog and Digital Music Playback
The preamplifier operates with vacuum tubes, while the power amplifier is designed as a solid-state amplifier. This concept combines the characteristics of both amplifier types in an integrated device. In addition, the DA2 Digital Audio Module is already installed, allowing digital sources to be connected directly.
Technologies in the MA12000
Autoformer™ technology provides high power output. Power Guard® monitors the output signal and makes real-time micro-adjustments to the input signal to prevent harsh clipping. Sentry Monitor™ protects the output stage without a fuse by shutting down when the current is too high and automatically resetting once safe operating conditions return.
Numerous Connections for Analog Sources and Vinyl
Ten inputs are available for analog sources: two balanced inputs, six unbalanced inputs, and one phono input each for Moving Coil and Moving Magnet. Both phono inputs offer adjustable loading to allow for matching with the respective turntable configuration. For further system integration, one balanced output, one unbalanced fixed output, and one unbalanced variable output are available.
DA2 Digital Audio Module for Digital Sources
The installed DA2 Digital Audio Module offers seven digital inputs: two coaxial, two optical, one USB input, one MCT input, and one HDMI (ARC) input for audio. The MA12000 is also certified as a Roon Tested device.
TV Sound and Home Theater Integration
The HDMI (ARC) input is used to connect to a compatible TV with an HDMI (ARC) output and is exclusively for audio. It does not transmit video to a TV and does not receive video from a TV. Multi-channel audio formats from Dolby® and DTS® are supported and converted for playback in 2-channel audio. Home Theater PassThru allows integration into a home theater system. With CEC communication activated on both the MA12000 and the TV, power and volume can be controlled via the TV remote control.
Tone Control, Headphones, and Operation
The MA12000 features analog tone control with Tone Bypass and Input Assign, allowing the sound to be perfectly adjusted to one's own taste without loss of quality. A High Drive Headphone Amplifier with Headphone Crossfeed Director HXD® is available for headphones. Operation is via the controls on the front or via the included comprehensive remote control.
Workmanship and Home Integration
The device is designed in the classic McIntosh style: with two blue watt meters, black glass front panel, rotary knobs, illuminated logo, aluminum end caps with integrated handles, and a polished stainless steel chassis. The Autoformers and power transformer are housed in a glass-covered enclosure with a glass nameplate and decorative trim ring. McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsinks™ are connected to high-current output transistors and support the amplifier's thermal operation.
