Description
Matrix Audio MS-1: Music Streamer with Dual-Mono DAC and MM/MC Phono
The Matrix Audio MS-1 is a music streamer with a dual-mono DAC that combines network streaming with a personal music archive of existing digital and analog sources.
Matrix Audio MS-1 Features at a Glance
- Music selection: Streaming services and personal file archive with app control.
- Source integration: Digital and analog inputs, including MM/MC phono.
- Signal processing: Dual-mono DAC, PCM resampling, and DSD conversion.
- Construction: CNC-machined aluminum enclosure with separate electronic sections.
Streaming and Music Archive with the Matrix Audio MS-1
TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, and Spotify Connect are available for streaming. AirPlay 2, Roon Ready, and DLNA/UPnP complement this selection, while the MA Remote app for iPhone, iPad, and Android smartphones also brings together local music, internet radio, and device settings.
The personal collection can be played from USB storage or stored on an optional internal M.2 NVMe SSD. Its contents can be managed via network sharing or supplemented using the app's copy function.
The streamer connects to the network via Ethernet or the SFP port with a suitable optional module. Track information and cover art remain visible on the device display.
Digital and Analog Sources on the Matrix Audio MS-1
The source selection does not end with the network: For computers and digital players, the MS-1 offers USB Audio, optical and coaxial S/PDIF inputs, as well as IIS-LVDS. Analog devices connect via XLR and RCA, while the phono input can be switched between MM and MC.
Analog input signals are digitized internally and are therefore also available at the IIS-LVDS digital output. This allows a compatible external converter to be used in addition to the integrated DAC.
Dual-Mono DAC and Clocking in the Matrix Audio MS-1
For internal conversion, Matrix Audio uses AKM chipsets consisting of AK4191 and AK4499, with separate circuit boards for the left and right channels. Adjustable PCM resampling and DSD conversion complement this dual-mono design.
The internal clock supply can be expanded with an external clock via the 10 MHz input. The analog signal then leaves the MS-1 via the fixed-level XLR line output.
Construction and Workmanship of the Matrix Audio MS-1
The separation of the components continues in the enclosure: An H-shaped aluminum structure creates separate areas for the electronics. In addition, dedicated toroidal transformers for the analog and digital sections are used, while CNC-machined, matte surfaces define the exterior design.

Suitability and Important Notes for the Matrix Audio MS-1
Who is the Matrix Audio MS-1 suitable for?
- HiFi systems with a separate preamplifier or integrated amplifier.
- Music listeners who want to use streaming, a personal file archive, and existing players together.
Important Notes for the Matrix Audio MS-1
- This version is the MS-1 without preamplifier functionality; external volume control is required.
- IIS-LVDS requires suitable pin assignment and is not an HDMI ARC connection.
- The SSD and SFP module are sold separately; the phono connection values must match the phono cartridge.
Conclusion
The Matrix Audio MS-1 is suitable for systems with a fixed preamplifier that want to incorporate both current streaming services and a personal music collection.
