Matrix Audio TS-1: Music Streamer for Headphones and Active Speakers
The Matrix Audio TS-1 is a music streamer with a built-in digital-to-analog converter and headphone amplifier. It plays music from the internet or your own file collection and prepares it for headphones, active speakers, or an existing HiFi system.
The Features of the Matrix Audio TS-1 at a Glance
- Music selection: Manage streaming services and your own music files together.
- Direct listening: Connect headphones or use speakers with a built-in amplifier.
- Additional sources: Connect a TV, computer, and analog audio devices.
- Your own collection: Use network storage, USB storage, and an optional internal SSD.
- Operation: Control music via the touch display, app, or included remote control.
Selecting Music with the Matrix Audio TS-1
For an evening with your favorite album, TIDAL, Qobuz, HIGHRESAUDIO, and internet radio are available, among others. Playback can also be started from the respective service app via Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, or Qobuz Connect. AirPlay 2 enables music playback from compatible Apple devices.
The TS-1 can also be used as a playback device in an existing Roon music system.
The home network connection is made via network cable or Wi-Fi. A wired connection is recommended for high-resolution music. The available content and audio quality depend on the service used and, if applicable, the subscription.
Headphones and Speakers on the Matrix Audio TS-1
At a desk or in a listening room, headphones can be connected directly to the front. The options include a standard 6.35 mm jack and a balanced 4.4 mm connection for headphones with a suitable cable.
The built-in digital-to-analog converter, or DAC, converts digital music data into an analog audio signal. For this, the TS-1 uses its own AK4493SEQ converter chip per channel; the analog and digital circuits are arranged on separate circuit boards.
An existing system can be connected via the analog XLR or RCA outputs. Active speakers or a separate power amplifier can be powered directly with an adjustable output level.
A dedicated output is available for an active subwoofer. With an adjustable output level, the volume of the active subwoofer is controlled together with the analog main outputs. Passive speakers still require an amplifier.
Using a TV and Other Sources with the Matrix Audio TS-1
A TV with HDMI ARC can transmit its sound to the TS-1 via a suitable HDMI cable. For this, set the TV's digital audio output to PCM.
Optical and coaxial digital inputs accept other suitable playback devices. USB Audio also makes a computer a music source.
An RCA input is available for devices with an analog output. A turntable requires a suitable phono preamplifier, either built-in or as a separate device.
Your Own Music Collection on the Matrix Audio TS-1
Music files can be played from USB storage or network storage. Additionally, a suitable NVMe SSD, i.e., an internal storage drive, can be retrofitted. The collection stored on it is also accessible from the computer via the home network.
With a separately available USB CD drive and the MA Remote app, CDs can be transferred as music files to an internal SSD retrofit. The app is available on iPhone, iPad, and Android smartphones for selecting albums and adjusting device settings. The touch display shows track information and offers playback control; the infrared remote control complements operation from your seat.
Suitability and Important Notes for the Matrix Audio TS-1
Who is the Matrix Audio TS-1 suitable for?
- For headphone listeners who want to play music without an additional computer.
- For systems with active speakers at a desk or in a living room.
- For music lovers who use streaming and an existing file collection.
