Description
Using the ST-3000 with AV equipment, including solid-state and tube devices, improves the quality of sound reproduction.
The most significant results are achieved when the power conditioner is used with power amplifiers.
In highly dynamic parts of an audio track (e.g., tutti fortissimo of a full symphony orchestra, sounds of large ethnic drums, bass parts of experimental electronic music, cinematic SFX), a powerful amplifier must draw significant current surges from a power supply, which can reach magnitudes of 50-100 A, while maintaining voltage levels without dips.
An ordinary household outlet, connected to a distribution board via long electrical cables, is unable to provide such current levels due to its relatively high output impedance. The ST-3000 has an output DC resistance of 0.4 Ω, so it can easily deliver high current surges without experiencing voltage dips.
This is achieved by using a transformer with a very large core, which results in a very low magnetic flux density. In turn, the response time of a power amplifier to a changing audio signal is reduced, which benefits the reproduction of transients, especially in lower frequency bands. An audio reproduction system exhibits a wider dynamic range, leading to more realistic-sounding musical instruments and cinematic SFX.
Another problem with powering high-quality equipment is noise in electrical networks. This occurs when switches and controllers of electric motors, dimmers, and normal lighting, as well as switched-mode power supplies of modern AV equipment, are used nearby. High-quality CEE 7/3 sockets are galvanically isolated from an external electrical network. The transformer is equipped with reliable electrostatic shielding. Single-ended electrical disturbances are counteracted by a principle of mutual cancellation. The secondary winding of the transformer is divided into two halves and has an artificial center tap connected to the earth clips of each socket outlet. The ST-3000 transformer was designed to function as a low-pass filter with a cutoff at 800 Hz, as all electrical network disturbances occur at much higher frequencies. Secondly, the filter effect is caused by the self-inductance of a very large core, which means the magnetic flux cannot change instantly under transient disturbance. All the above technical aspects allow for almost complete removal of electrical network noise and reliable, high-quality power supply to audio equipment.
When the power conditioner is switched on for the first time, the transformer experiences an inrush current of approximately 20 A during the magnetization of the transformer core. This implements a soft start in the power conditioner. A special series resistor limits the current surge, so other electrical devices connected to the same electrical network remain unaffected.
Audes Power Conditioners have overload protection and thermal protection, which switches off the transformer if its temperature reaches 90 °C. Once the temperature drops to 75 °C, the device automatically reconnects to the electrical network. The transformer was designed to maximize the number of turns in the primary winding. For this reason, the power consumption of the ST-3000 under no-load conditions is only 16 W.
The ST-3000 generates virtually no acoustic noise, which allows its use not only with domestic high-end audio equipment, home cinemas, and showrooms, but also in sound recording studios.
In the ST-900 DC, ST-1500, ST-3000, and ST-5000 models, the Audes proprietary DC Blocker is installed. This serves to eliminate hum from DC components in the mains. It is a proprietary development that works in a sound-neutral way and thus does not diminish the sound gain from the power conditioner.
