Why the basic decisions are more important than the model
A turntable is not an investment for two years. Good turntables last for decades – devices that are forty years old and still function perfectly are traded on the used market. So you are buying something that will accompany you for a very long time.
That's exactly why it's worth looking at what can be changed later and what cannot. The cartridge is a wear part and will eventually be replaced anyway – that's normal and even a good opportunity to re-align the sound. With the tonearm, it depends on the concept: In many entry-level and mid-range devices, it is firmly connected to the drive, so it sets the upper limit of what you can get out of the device later. Drives with a modular design are built differently – there, the tonearm is an independent component and can be specifically replaced with a higher-quality one.
Therefore, the advice right at the beginning: First sort out the fundamental questions – drive, features, upgradeability, what's around it – and then the model. Optics and price are important, but they only help you within the right category.
Terms sorted: What a turntable consists of
Four components that must work together. Once you've sorted them out, you'll understand where the extra cost in higher price ranges comes from.
The drive – plinth, bearing, and platter. Its task sounds simple: to rotate the record at a constant speed and transmit as few vibrations as possible to the cartridge. That's where the art lies. Mass, material selection, bearing quality, and decoupling determine how stable the surface is on which the stylus operates. The plinth is not just a decorative element, but significantly contributes to how well the whole system is isolated from external and internal vibrations.
The drive and its control – motor plus the electronics that keep it at speed. This determines how accurately and constantly the speed is maintained. In simple devices, the control is located in the housing; in higher-quality ones, it moves to a separate power supply outside the plinth – away from the sensitive components, with a noticeable effect. That's exactly why an external motor control is one of the most common upgrades in the vinyl sector.
The tonearm – it guides the cartridge over the record. It must be flexible enough to follow every groove and at the same time stable enough not to vibrate itself. It determines how far you can go up with the cartridge later – and is therefore the component where quality pays off the longest.
The cartridge – the small box at the front of the tonearm. It contains a cantilever with a diamond tip that plunges into the groove and scans the information. It determines the sound character most directly of all components – and it is the only true wear part. Cartridges
How it all connects: The cartridge largely determines how it sounds. The tonearm determines how high-quality the cartridge can be before its potential is no longer realized. And the drive determines how cleanly both can work. Therefore, it makes little sense to operate a very expensive system on a simple drive – and just as little to slow down an excellent drive with an entry-level system.
With high-quality manufacturers, this is a deliberate modular principle: You first choose the drive with its finish, then the matching tonearm, then the cartridge – from the same manufacturer or a third-party supplier. This sounds more complicated than it is, and it has a big advantage: You get exactly the combination that suits your budget and your demands.

Step 1: Belt drive or direct drive?
The first real fork in the road – and one where there is no wrong answer, but two different philosophies.
Belt Drive
The motor is not located under the platter, but offset to the side, driving it via a rubber belt. The belt decouples, so motor vibrations reach the platter only damped.
This is the principle that most classic hi-fi manufacturers rely on – from entry-level devices to heavy mass drives in the top segment.
Note: With simpler models, to switch between 33 and 45 revolutions, you have to remove the platter and reposition the belt. Above a certain class, there is an external motor control that allows switching speeds at the push of a button – much more convenient. And the belt is a wear part: After a few years, it stretches and needs to be replaced. This is neither expensive nor complicated, but it's part of the picture.
Direct Drive
The motor sits directly under the platter and drives it without an intermediate link. The most famous example of this design comes from the DJ sector, where precise and immediately stable speeds are mandatory – but modern direct drives in the hi-fi sector are long since something different from their predecessors.
Strengths: extremely low wow and flutter, immediate speed stability, speed changes at the push of a button, and practically no wear on the drive itself. The only thing that wears out is the cartridge.
Note: Because the motor sits directly under the platter, it must be mechanically very cleanly executed. Good direct drives solve this excellently – with very inexpensive devices, it's a weak point.
What does this mean for you?
Honestly, both principles work excellently at a high level. The wow and flutter of a good belt drive are technically measurable above those of a good direct drive, but are generally not audible to the human ear – at least as long as the belt is in good condition.
Practical distinguishing feature: Those who appreciate ease of use, speed stability, and low maintenance will be very happy with a direct drive. Those who like the classic hi-fi design and want to move into higher classes will find predominantly belt drives there – above a certain price range, it is simply the more common design.

Step 2: What do you need around it?
This is the point that is most often overlooked when buying a first turntable – and the one that generates the most questions in our store.
The Phono Preamp: Not Optional
A turntable delivers an extremely quiet signal with a special equalization. Both must be processed before a normal amplifier can do anything with it. Without a phono preamp, you will either hear nothing at all or a thin, far too quiet signal.
You have three options:
- Phono input on the amplifier. Many integrated amplifiers have one – usually for MM systems. If yours has one: best case, you need nothing else.
- Built-in preamp in the turntable. Increasingly common, especially in the entry-level and ambitious entry-level segments. The turntable then connects to any normal Line or Aux input. Good devices allow the preamp to be switched off – important if you later want to switch to an external solution.
- External phono preamp. Generally the best sound solution, because here the entire development and the complete power supply are optimized for this one task. And the only option if you want to use an MC system and your amplifier only supports MM.

Amplifier and Speakers
If you already have a system, check two things: Is there a phono input, and if so – MM or also MC? If not, a free line or aux input plus one of the other two solutions above is the way to go.
If you're starting from scratch, all options are open to you. A very elegant solution for those who want as little effort as possible: a turntable with a built-in phono preamp connected to a pair of active speakers. If the speakers can also stream and offer HDMI, you have a complete system including TV sound – from two components.

The Phono Cable
A detail with practical relevance. Some turntables are wired through from the cartridge to the RCA plugs – in this case, the question doesn't arise, and the quality is usually decent. Others have a pluggable connection panel on the back. There, you can later replace the supplied cable with a higher-quality one if you want to get more out of the device. The Surface
Not an accessory in the strict sense, but more important than most people think: A turntable needs a straight, stable, and vibration-free placement. It scans grooves in the micrometer range – anything that comes in from outside as vibration potentially ends up in the signal.
It becomes critical with springy wall shelves, wobbly sideboards, or wooden floors that vibrate with every step. A heavy, torsionally rigid rack or a solidly mounted wall console solves this reliably.
Step 3: How much convenience do you want?
Here's a point that particularly surprises re-entry users.
Those who listened to records in the seventies or eighties are familiar with fully automatic players: press a button, the tonearm moves onto the record by itself, plays it, lifts up at the end, and returns. You put on a record and went shopping.
Today, that's the exception. The reason is less technical than cultural: listening to records today is rarely background music, but something you do consciously. You put it on, sit down, listen. Automatic mechanisms bring additional components close to the tonearm – and where effort is expended today, it is rather invested in the drive, bearings, and tonearm.
The levels of convenience you'll encounter in practice:
- Manual. You place the tonearm on and lift it off at the end. The normal case for most hi-fi turntables.
- Auto-stop. A sensible compromise offered by some devices: The tonearm automatically lifts in the run-out groove. It doesn't return, but the annoying scratching at the end is avoided – and you don't have to sit next to it.
- Fully automatic. Has become rare. If you absolutely need it, you should specifically look for it – talk to us, and we'll see together what's currently available.
Further convenience features you can look for
Electronic speed switching. Switch between 33 and 45 at the push of a button instead of repositioning the belt. Especially relevant if you listen to many singles or 45-rpm pressings.
78 RPM. For shellac records. Only a few devices offer this, and most people never need it – but if you own a shellac collection, you'll need to look specifically for it.
Tonearm height adjustment. Sounds technical, but is very practical: If you later install a different cartridge with a different height, the tonearm must run parallel to the record again. With height adjustment, this is stepless; without it, you work with spacers. A clear sign that a device was built with upgradeability in mind.
Interchangeable headshell. The cartridge sits on a small removable carrier. This makes changing the system much more convenient – you can leisurely mount the cartridge at your desk instead of fumbling with the device. And you can have several systems prepared and switch them in seconds.
Bluetooth. Recently also found in record players. Practical if your active speakers are further away and no cable can be laid – or if you want to listen via headphones without disturbing anyone. Current Bluetooth variants transmit perfectly decent quality. For a fixed system, cable is still the first choice.
The dust cover. Sounds trivial, but relevant in everyday life. It protects against dust and accidental touches. Pay attention to whether it stays open in any position – if your turntable is in a shelf with limited height, this is a real advantage. And measure beforehand: Some devices are a few centimeters more compact than others, and sometimes those few centimeters decide whether it fits into your existing furniture.
Step 4: The Cartridge – MM or MC?
The cartridge is the component that most directly shapes the sound character – and the only one that wears out over time.
MM – Moving Magnet
The widespread standard. A small magnet on the cantilever moves in stationary coils. Advantages: higher output voltage, meaning it can be operated uncomplicatedly with practically any phono input. And the most important practical point – with most MM systems, only the stylus insert can be replaced when the diamond is worn. This is significantly cheaper than a complete new system and can be done without tools.
Many manufacturers offer different quality stylus inserts for the same system base. So you can work your way up in sound quality without having to re-adjust anything – a very elegant upgrade option.
MC – Moving Coil
The inverse principle: The coils move, the magnet is stationary. The moving mass is smaller, which generally leads to finer resolution and better detail reproduction. That's why most high-quality systems are MC.
Two consequences: The output voltage is significantly lower, so you need a phono preamplifier that explicitly supports MC. And with most MC systems, the stylus cannot be replaced individually – if the diamond is worn or the cantilever is damaged, the system goes back to the manufacturer or is replaced.

What this means for you
For beginners, a good MM system is a sensible choice: uncomplicated to connect, inexpensive to maintain, and sonically absolutely serious. Many turntables come with one ex works that does its job well.
Switching to MC is one of the most rewarding steps if you want to delve deeper – but it needs to be prepared: a suitable preamplifier, a tonearm that can fully exploit the system, and the willingness to adjust more carefully. That's precisely why it's worth paying attention to a good tonearm when making your initial purchase. It's the component that keeps this path open for you later.
Regarding lifespan: A diamond wears out with operating hours and becomes unilaterally abraded – eventually, it no longer sounds like it did at the beginning, and in the worst case, the record suffers. How much do I have to spend?
Honest answer first: There are turntables for 100 or 200 euros. We don't carry them, for one simple reason – we wouldn't want to listen to a record with them ourselves. Not out of snobbery, but because such devices cut corners exactly where it matters for sound quality, and because in the worst case, they can damage your records.
What you should realistically plan for:
Entry-level starts at around 300 Euros. For that, you get a solid turntable with a usable tonearm and usually a pre-mounted cartridge – a device that makes listening to records truly enjoyable.
Ambitious entry-level is in the range of 1,000 to 1,300 Euros. Something important happens here: the tonearms in this class are so good that even with high-quality cartridges, you won't push them to their limits. They often come with tonearm height adjustment, electronic speed selection, and an already decent cartridge system. This is the class where most of our customers end up – and for good reason: such a device will accompany you for decades and grow with your demands.
Above that, we move into the mid-range and high-end, where mass turntables, elaborate bearings, high-quality tonearms, and the modular principle mentioned above begin. Here, you assemble your device yourself from the turntable, tonearm, and cartridge.
The sky's the limit. In the high-end sector, there are turntables that cost well into six figures. This is not boasting, but simply the market – and the reason why we prefer to offer personal advice on this topic rather than just handing out a price list.
The most important budget tip: Plan for the upgrade you want in a few years. A turntable with a good tonearm and switchable phono preamplifier costs a bit more today – and saves you from buying a completely new one later if the hobby becomes bigger than planned. And a hobby rarely gets smaller.
Setup and Adjustment
Two points that cost nothing and yet determine a significant part of the result.
The Placement
A turntable traces grooves in the micrometer range. Anything that comes in as external vibration potentially ends up in the signal. Therefore: a stable, preferably heavy surface, far enough away from the loudspeakers so that sound does not feed back directly. It becomes difficult on vibrating floors or wobbly furniture – a good rack or a wall console helps significantly here.
And the turntable must be level. You check this with a spirit level on the platter. Many devices have height-adjustable feet that can be used to compensate for this.
The Adjustment
A turntable rarely comes out of the box perfectly adjusted – and even if a cartridge is pre-mounted, tracking force and anti-skating require your attention. Both not only affect the sound but also how gently your system treats your records.

Honestly: In our experience, a large proportion of turntables in German living rooms do not perform at the level they could – simply because the adjustment has never been made or checked. This is a shame because a lot of sound potential that has already been paid for goes unrealized.

Common Turntable Buying Mistakes
Forgetting the phono preamplifier. The most common case of all. The turntable arrives, is plugged into the aux input – and almost nothing comes out. Clarify beforehand: Does the amplifier have a phono input? Is there a preamplifier in the turntable? If both are no, an external solution must be included in the budget.
MC cartridge on an MM input. Related case. The signal is then much too quiet, and one looks for the error in the wrong places.
Buying too cheaply. Below a certain threshold, you get devices that neither bring joy nor protect your record collection. Better to save a little longer.
Only looking at the cartridge. A high-quality cartridge on a simple tonearm does not deliver what it costs – the potential simply does not come through.
Transporting the turntable incorrectly. Important and little known: When moving or transporting, the platter and counterweight should always be removed. Both sit on sensitive bearings that can be damaged by vibrations. That's why they are also packed separately in the box.
Not checking the dimensions. Turntables are larger than you think, and the dust cover needs space above it. Measure beforehand – including the height of the shelf compartment.
Setting up on a wobbly surface. Wall shelves that spring or furniture that vibrates with every step ruin any sound quality.
Never readjusting. The tracking force changes slightly over time. Re-measuring once a year takes five minutes.
Not caring for your records. Dust in the groove is the enemy of both sound and stylus. A carbon brush before each play is minimal effort with great effect. Record Care and Accessories
Checklist: Eight Questions for the Right Turntable
- Do I have a phono input? On the amplifier, in the turntable – or do I need an external preamplifier? MM or MC?
- What should it be connected to? Existing system, active speakers, or am I building a completely new setup?

- Should it be able to grow with me? Then pay attention to a good tonearm, tonearm height adjustment, and a switchable preamplifier.

- Do I like its appearance? A turntable is visibly in the room and stays for decades. Aesthetics can be a criterion.

Yes. The only question is where it's located: in the amplifier, in the turntable, or as a separate device. Without it, the signal is much too quiet and tonally incorrectly equalized.

How much does a good entry-level turntable cost?

How long does a stylus last?

Can I connect my turntable to a soundbar?
If the soundbar has an analog input and the turntable has a built-in phono preamplifier, it works. It's not the ideal sonic path, but it's a pragmatic one – and much better than not listening to records at all.
Does vinyl really sound better than streaming?
"Better" is the wrong category. Vinyl sounds different, and many find this character more pleasant and lively. Added to that is something that has nothing to do with measurements: You consciously put on a record, turn it over, listen to an album as a whole. That changes how you listen to music. The nicest thing, anyway, is to have both.
Do I need to clean my records?
For everyday use, a carbon brush before each play is sufficient. Those who buy a lot of used records or maintain a large collection will get an astonishing amount out of a record cleaning machine – especially with records that have been stored uncared for decades. Can I still use an old turntable from the attic?
Often yes, and sometimes it's very worthwhile. You need to check the belt (if present), bearings, and especially the condition of the stylus – an old, worn stylus will damage your records. Feel free to bring it in, and we'll see together if a refurbishment is worthwhile.
